1: Oops!
Bad things happen to good people, even when they are on vacation. Lost luggage, delayed flights, tummy troubles and much more can befall any traveler. But please remember (and act accordingly) YOU ARE ON VACATION and probably somewhere really cool. Don’t let your attitude diminish your gratitude. Controlling negativity makes all the difference and sets a great example for your traveling companion and/or kids.
2: It Costs What?
Be wise not wasteful. Don’t count pennies and squander dollars. You have already invested a lot in time and money to get where you are, so enrich your experience by being smart with your money and time. If walking a bit is possible, do it. You get a perspective you can’t get from the backseat of a cab. Ask locals where and what to eat instead of hitting that fancy restaurant you saw on TV. Live the experience not landmark.
3: Was that Hadrian’s Tomb?
Unless you have weeks to spend in every one of your destinations, chances are you can’t see everything they have to offer. It’s OK. Enjoy the time you do have by not killing yourself over what you are not doing. Prioritize your time and hit 2 or 3 of your must-sees a day, leaving plenty of time for those magical travel experiences that only occur when you are present and open.
4: Make Mine a Venti!
Big chain retailers are great. They offer a wide variety of stuff just the way we like it. They are on every corner and provide an amazingly consistent shopping experience. When you are traveling, don’t go there. One of the easiest ways to dive into local culture is to shop, drink and eat the way that locals do. Sure, American chains are conquering the world and can be found almost everywhere, but hit some local mom and pops, even large stores, for some regional flavor. See how a Roman coffee house differs from your usual. Exploring cultural differences is one great reason to travel, don’t miss it.
5: What a Know-it-all!
No matter how many guidebooks or travel blogs you have read, if you have never been there before, get a guide or take a tour. Getting a little of local knowledge and perspective can really change the way you experience your destination. Start with an overall tour to introduce you to the must-sees, than find a walking tour in an area that caught your eye.
Always remember, it's a privilege to travel. Be open, kind and grateful, and amazing, life changing travel experiences will follow you everywhere.
